What you need to know about poker’s rules

Although the rules may alter somewhat from one poker variant to another, the fundamental principles of the game are always the same. A poker game revolves on the “bank,” or initial monetary investment made by each participant. The cards are dealt out by the dealer. The player’s collection of cards is known as “the hand.”
In a game of poker, the most important role is that of the dealer. A dealer is the “host” of a card game and is responsible for distributing the cards to the participants. The player on the dealer’s left receives the first card in a clockwise fashion. In most versions of poker (including the most popular, Texas Hold’em), the position of the dealer is known as the “button,” and is believed to be the most “beneficial” since the holder is often the last player to make a wager.
The betting rounds begin once the cards have been dealt and continue until all players have had an opportunity to place a wager. It is customary to pass the cards clockwise and to proceed with the betting in the same direction. Whoever has the best hand at the end of the game is declared the winner.
Each player in Texas Hold ’em receives two cards, one of which is dealt face down. There may also be up to five shared cards dealt. Community cards are shared among all players and may be utilized to make the best possible hand. If more than one person has a winning hand, the bank is divided evenly between them. In the event of a tie for the last chip in the bank, the player holding the higher value card takes the chip.
